Emergency Water Line Repairs Affect Traffic Along 20th Street

GREELEY, Colo. — Two water main breaks discovered on 20th Street near 46th Avenue early Saturday require more attention than Greeley Water crews expected. Once crews exposed the 61-year-old transmission line, they discovered a section that requires significant repairs.

Repairs to the pipeline and road could take up to three weeks.

Eastbound traffic on 20th Street has one lane open at 46th Avenue. Drivers cannot turn south from 20th Street onto 46th Avenue until the project is complete. Once crews obtain the necessary materials to start repairs, east- and west-bound traffic on 20th Street will be limited to a single lane.

“It’s times like this where the resiliency of Greeley’s water system really pays off. We safely rerouted the water to the storage reservoir with minimal issues,” said Adam Prior, chief engineer at Greeley’s Water and Sewer Department. “We are fortunate that this break occurred before the start of irrigation season and no water customers are affected by this break.”

Crews will replace approximately 100-150 feet of 36-inch steel transmission line with ductile iron pipe that is stronger and more readily available than steel.

Drivers who require access to 46th Avenue can use West 20th Street Road off of 47th Avenue. Please allow additional drive time or avoid the area altogether if you can.
