So, You're Getting a New Water Meter
After decades of operation, Greeley’s water meters are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced. Greeley has been awarded $3.5 million in grants from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation between 2020 and 2022. This has enabled the City to replace most of the water meters in a multiple-phase project. In total, the City plans to replace 29,500 meters by 2026. Collectively, the project is expected to save 350 million gallons each year, boosting water conservation and providing the Greeley community with the tools to control and monitor their water use.
The City will install advanced water meters in a phased approach by neighborhood using a third-party contractor Utility Metering Solutions (UMS). Residents will be informed prior to installation, including information about the meters, what happens during the install, and how customers can utilize their water portal to manage water use.

What to Expect When You Get Your New Meter
Congratulations! You now have more control over your water use and billing. The new meter will provide you with accurate water use data and allow you to look more closely at it. Understanding your daily water use through the year will help you make more informed water use decisions that impact your billing and your wise use of a scarce resource.
Here are a few helpful insights for after your new meter is operating:
- Daily use information may surprise you. You might see more than 800 gallons of water per hour to water your yard.
- Detailed water usage data can help you cut down on waste and manage your billing.
- The old meters lose their ability to measure every drop over time as mechanical parts wear down inside the meter. All new meters have been factory tested and will read all usage. If your old meter was less than accurate, you may see a modest increase in your use over the same period last year. If your use is significantly more than in prior periods, the City’s water conservation or engineering team can assist with troubleshooting.
- The city offers leak detection appoints free of charge, for assistance. Sign-up on our website.
- WaterSmart is an application that allows the customer to track and understand their use. Staff members are happy to assist with set up and questions.
If you have other concerns about your new meter or how it was installed, please reach out to our staff at: (970) 350-9811 ext. 1 or by email: utility.billing@greeleygov.com.
What Makes These New Meters so Great?
Advanced metering works like your current meter to track the water that passes by, but it also allows for near real-time communication between a household’s water meter, city of Greeley Utility Billing, and your household through WaterSmart.
This new meter provides more accurate data on water consumption, allowing you and the City to detect leaks and stop them before becoming larger problems. (See detail below)
The project is expected to result in annual water savings of 615 acre-feet (200 million gallons) a year through conservation from customers knowing their water usage, reducing water lost from common leaks (shown below), and alerting the city and customer service line breaks.
