How Your Water Budget Is Calculated

Your water budget is the total amount of water you need for outdoor and indoor use. It’s based on your landscape size, daily weather conditions, and the number of people in your household.

• Your indoor water budget  is based on the number of people in your household. The budget default is three people in each household, so if you have more or less than three people in your home, please update your information. Each household is allocated 45 gallons per person per day. 

• Your outdoor water budget is the amount of water you need to keep your landscaping healthy. It is based on the actual water needs of your lawn using:
  • Real-time Greeley weather
  • Your total irrigable area which is defined as the total area that could be landscaped, including any rights-of-way you’re responsible for maintaining. It does not include the roof of your house, patios, driveways, or other hardscapes.
• You are budgeted for outdoor watering beginning April 15 and ending on October 31. Did you know that your grass typically needs about half as much water in April, May, and October than it does in July? It needs even less if the weather is cool and rainy. You’ll notice your water budget go up when the weather is hot and dry, and then go down when the weather is cool and wet.

There are several actions you can take to stay within your water budget:

• Sign up for WaterSmart. It works together with your water budget to help you see your usage, follow recommended water-saving actions, and view results and potential savings. And it’s free!
• Turn off your sprinklers when it rains! Always take weather conditions into account when watering your lawn.
• Change water run times oat least monthly. July is our peak water use month; build up to it in the spring, then ramp down in the fall.
• Schedule an indoor or outdoor audit through Greeley’s conservation program.
